We are frequently asked this question. From many perspectives, it is hard to tell the difference between the Kess 3 salve tuning tool and the Kess 3 master. Both tools have the same appearance. In addition, the connectors and cables are identical on both tools. The protocol options that are available for both Kess master and Kess slave are identical. So there are very few differences it would seem on first inspection.

Master:

One important difference between Kess Master and Alientech Kess 3 Slave is that Kess 3 Master can read open files. Therefore, the master tool reading data from the vehicle does not encrypt the data. You can therefore edit the software. It is therefore possible for you to create your own tuning file if you wish. Or for a new file, you can send it to any tuner to do this for you

Slave:

Slave tuning tools read the original software from a vehicle that cannot be accessed. Typically, such files are encrypted and protected. It is not possible to access the data read from the vehicle. Tuning files must be sent to your “master” in order to be de-coded for loading on your vehicle. For each salve tool, only one master is allowed. He or she supplies it with new software.

Alientech Upgrade to Master

Can a Slave Alientech Kess 3 tuning tool be upgraded to a master tool?

The answer is yes! Just because you purchased your tool as a slave tool doesn’t mean you must keep it that way. It is possible to achieve Master status by paying the difference between Save and Master prices. This is the price difference between the sale tool and the master price.  If the master agrees, the upgrade can take place. Some masters, however, are not open to this change.

Can a Kess3 Slave tool move from one master to another?  

The Alientech Kess3 Slave can theoretically move to another file provider if you’re unhappy with your current one. Here’s the problem… The catch is… approval has to come from your current file provider. If you ask, most Alientech sellers will not allow you to move a tool. It is important that you discuss this question with anyone you intend to buy a Kess tuning tool from.
