View our VIEZU Technical Academy FAQs for the questions (and answers) that we get asked about our online & in-person vehicle tuning training

Section 1: For Complete Beginners

Do I need any car or mechanical experience to start learning vehicle tuning?

Not at all. Many of our most successful students came to us with zero mechanical background. What matters is curiosity and a willingness to learn. We start from the very basics, explaining what an ECU is, how it controls your engine and how tuning works. We also offer completely free introductory courses on Remap101 at www.remap101.co.uk, so you can explore the subject before spending anything.

What is the first step to learning vehicle tuning as a complete beginner?

Start with our free vehicle tuning training courses. No prior experience needed. These cover ECU fundamentals, how remapping works and an introduction to tools and software. Paid online courses start from as little as £75, or you can attend an in-person course at our UK HQ in Warwickshire (Get directions to the VIEZU Technical Academy). Call us on +44 (0) 1789 774444 and we will point you in the right direction.

Can I learn to tune my own car with your courses?

Yes, and it is one of the most popular reasons people start with us. Tuning your own vehicle is a great way to develop hands-on skills and see real results quickly. Our beginner tuning training courses teach you how to safely read an ECU, understand tuning maps and make adjustments for performance or fuel economy, all at your own pace.

How long does it take to become a proficient vehicle tuner?

It depends on your starting point, but our structured training is designed to accelerate your journey. Some students complete a beginner online course and are working on their first vehicles within days. For a professional-level skill set, a combination of online modules and an in-person masterclass (1 to 5 days depending on depth) provides a very strong foundation. Our expert support team is available 7 days a week as you work on real vehicles.

Is there a free way to try vehicle tuning training before committing to a paid course?

Yes. We offer completely free vehicle tuning training courses on Remap101, including introductions to EVC WinOLS 5, Alientech ECM Titanium 3.0 and Autotuner. We also run free technical webinars. Get started today. No credit card required.

Section 2: For Garage Owners and Motor Trade Professionals

I run a garage. How can vehicle tuning help me grow my business?

ECU remapping is one of the most profitable services a modern garage can add. A typical remap takes 1 to 2 hours and can command fees of £150 to £500+, with minimal overhead once you have the right tools and training. You do not need extra workshop space and you can serve your existing customer base straight away. Our 7-day-a-week technical support means you are never left stuck on a vehicle with a customer waiting.

What qualifications will my staff receive after completing your training?

Our training is delivered through the VIEZU Technical Academy (VTA), an IMI-Approved Training Centre. Students completing our EVC-accredited WinOLS courses receive double certification: a VIEZU Technical Academy certificate and an official EVC certificate. Both are globally recognised and give your staff real professional credibility with customers.

Can my garage specialise in a particular vehicle type or manufacturer?

Absolutely. Many successful tuning businesses start as generalists covering common cars and vans, then develop profitable specialisms. We offer advanced courses in diesel, gasoline, HGV, agricultural tractors, marine and more. You could build a reputation as a VAG specialist, a commercial fleet tuner or a performance car expert. We can help you identify the most profitable niche for your area.

What tools and equipment will my garage need to start offering remapping?

The essentials are a professional tuning tool, such as the Alientech KESS3, Autotuner, Magic Motorsport FLEX or Dimsport TheGenius and a good laptop. Many garages start with a Slave tool setup, where you read the vehicle’s ECU and send the file to a master provider like VIEZU (returned in as little as 20 minutes during UK hours), so you do not need expensive software licences from day one. We are an official reseller of all major tuning tools and offer full tuning start-up kits.

Section 3: For Tech Enthusiasts, Coders and Career Changers

I am a software developer or coder. Could vehicle tuning be a good career for me?

Genuinely, yes. Writing custom tuning files in EVC WinOLS involves working directly with hexadecimal data, identifying map structures, interpreting data axes and making precise logical adjustments to ECU parameters. If you enjoy data analysis, pattern recognition and software problem-solving, you will find tuning file writing deeply engaging. Many of our fastest-progressing students come from IT, software and engineering backgrounds. Automotive-specific knowledge is what our training provides. The analytical thinking you already have.

What software is used in professional vehicle tuning and how does it work?

The industry standard for creating custom tuning files is EVC WinOLS 5, a powerful hex editor used by professional tuners worldwide. It presents raw ECU data as 3D maps which you identify, interpret, and modify, adjusting parameters like boost pressure, fuel injection, torque limiters, and ignition timing. We also train on Alientech ECM Titanium, StageX and Swiftec. WinOLS rewards a technical, data-driven mindset and gives unparalleled depth of access to ECU data.

I am interested in a career change into vehicle tuning. Is that realistic without an automotive background?

Very much so. We have helped many people make exactly this transition. You do not need a mechanical background. You need an analytical mindset, comfort with data and software and a willingness to learn the automotive-specific context. Our training covers everything from the ground up. The vehicle tuning industry is growing globally and there is real demand for skilled tuners. Graduates from software, IT, engineering and gaming backgrounds have built full-time careers through our courses.

Is WinOLS difficult to learn?

It looks intimidating at first because of the raw hexadecimal data, but our training is specifically designed to make it approachable. Our lead trainer Simon White is an EVC-certified trainer and one of the world’s leading authorities on WinOLS. He teaches pattern recognition, map identification and axis interpretation in a structured, logical way. Students with a data or coding background often find the concepts click faster than expected. We offer a free WinOLS overview course at so that you can see exactly what is involved before committing.

Section 4: Online Courses and Global Availability

I am not based in the UK. Can I still access your training?

Absolutely. We have a truly global student base. Our online courses on Remap101 are available to anyone, anywhere in the world. We also run in-person training in the USA (Salt Lake City, Utah and Las Vegas, including at the SEMA Show) and Dubai. In 2026 we launched our full WinOLS online course range in 9 world languages, making professional-grade tuning education accessible no matter where you are.

What languages are your vehicle tuning courses available in?

Our courses are available in 9 languages. In January 2026 we launched our complete WinOLS online training range translated into 9 world languages (including English). No other training provider offers this level of multilingual access to officially accredited tuning education. Further courses in additional software platforms are being released throughout 2026.

Are your online courses self-paced or do I have to attend live sessions?

Our online courses on Remap101 are fully self-paced. Work through them whenever suits you, with no fixed schedule. If you prefer live, instructor-led learning, our in-person courses in the UK, USA, and Dubai provide direct access to our expert trainers. Many students complete online modules first, then attend an in-person masterclass to put everything into practice.

How much do your courses cost?

We offer genuinely free introductory courses with no credit card required at www.remap101.co.uk. Paid online courses start from as little as £75. In-person training ranges from £150 for a single-day tool session up to around £4,200 for a 5-day intensive EVC WinOLS Diesel and Gasoline masterclass. Check our course calendar for current availability and Early Bird pricing, or call +44 (0) 1789 774444.

Do I need to buy any equipment before starting an online course?

No. For free and beginner online courses, all you need is a laptop and an internet connection. The courses explain which hardware and software you may want to invest in as you progress. Our advice is not to buy tools until you have a clear direction, and our team is happy to advise. We are also an official reseller of all major tuning tools, so we can supply everything when you are ready.

Section 5: In-Person Training and the VIEZU Workshop

What is the in-person training experience like at your UK facility?

Our in-person courses are held at VIEZU Technologies HQ in Bidford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. A key part of every course is hands-on time with our 3000hp Mustang MD-AWD-500 dynamometer, one of only a few in the UK capable of testing high-power AWD vehicles and heavy trucks. You work on real vehicles alongside master tuners who tune professionally every day. Getting time on the dyno is what students consistently point to as the moment things really clicked for them.

Who are the trainers? Are they active industry professionals?

Yes. Our lead trainer is Simon White, Technical Director of VIEZU Technologies and an EVC-certified trainer. Simon has 20 years of active tuning experience and has trained thousands of students worldwide. He tunes vehicles professionally every day, which means everything he teaches is current and immediately applicable. Our CEO Paul Busby, a Queen’s Award winner and Entrepreneur of the Year 2012, also contributes his business and industry expertise to the programme.

Section 6: Support, Career and Business Growth

What ongoing support do I receive after completing a course?

Your learning does not stop when the course ends. VIEZU provides lifetime technical support from expert file writers and advisors who are available when you face challenging real-world jobs. We also operate a live file writing service 7 days a week, with average turnaround times under 20 minutes during UK hours. When you have a customer’s vehicle on your ramp and need expert backup, it is there.

Can your training help me set up my own vehicle tuning business?

That is exactly what many of our students do. Our training covers the technical skills and the business foundations, from choosing tools and setting up your service offering to customer communication and workshop processes. VIEZU has a global dealer network, and our graduates can access this wider ecosystem of support, file services and resources. Whether you want to go mobile, open a workshop, or add tuning to an existing garage, we provide the training, qualifications, and ongoing backup to help you succeed.

What types of vehicles can I tune after completing your training?

Depending on which courses you complete, you can tune cars, vans, commercial trucks, agricultural tractors, construction equipment and marine craft. Beginner courses focus on common passenger cars and vans, which represent the highest volume of customer demand. Specialist courses in HGV, agricultural and performance vehicles open up higher-value work. Our technical support team is available for any vehicle that challenges you along the way.
