What is Dyno Tuning and What Impact Does Using a Dyno Have on Tuning?

A dynamometer, often called a rolling road here in the UK, is a sophisticated piece of kit that professional tuners use to measure engine outputs like horsepower, torque and fuel efficiency. Its primary role is to simulate real-world driving conditions within a controlled and safe workshop environment. This allows technicians to meticulously adjust the vehicle’s Engine Control Unit (ECU) based on logged data rather than guesswork. By relying on this precise, hard data, tuners can effectively diagnose problems and fine tune performance to achieve the perfect balance between power, economy and safety.

The Benefits of Professional Dyno Tuning Training

If you are fortunate to have access to a dyno, trying to teach yourself dyno tuning can easily and quickly lead to costly errors which can cause damage to the vehicle’s components. It can also lead to wasted time. Whereas a structured dyno tuning course offers several benefits:

  • Real-World Skills: An in-person dyno tuning training course gives you hands-on, real world experience of how to use this equipment to tune. It allows you to carefully work through the step by step diagnostic and calibration process. A professional in-person tuning course ensures you follow current industry-best practices from day one, which can save you a lot of time later on.
  • Safety and Reliability First: It’s surprisingly easy to damage an engine through poor, inexperienced tuning choices. Learning in a controlled environment with expert guidance means you can test and refine your remaps safely, properly understanding the crucial parameters that keep the engine healthy long-term.
  • Data-Driven Accuracy That You Can Trust: Our training focuses on the proper use of a dyno to acquire precise data. This is at the forefront of professional, repeatable tuning results.
  • Industry Recognition: Training with an accredited provider, especially an IMI Approved Training Centre like the VIEZU Technical Academy (VTA), gives you a qualification that shows a higher level of professionalism and competence to future clients or employers. It’s a stamp of quality that you have been trained by professionals that have dedicated their career to this industry.

Hands-On Training with the Mustang MD-AWD-500

Central to our in-person training is access to the Mustang MD-AWD-500 dynamometer. Capable of handling up to 3000hp, this hardware allows for the testing of very high-output vehicles, including high-power AWD and 4WD vehicles.

Why this hardware matters for your training:

  • Mechanically Linked System: The internal drive system synchronises the front and rear rollers. This prevents the activation of traction control and torque management systems, allowing for safe, accurate testing of sensitive AWD drivetrains without interference.
  • Exceptional Versatility: Designed to accommodate a wide range of wheelbases, the system also allows 2WD vehicles to be tested in AWD mode. This eliminates the speed differential between front and rear wheels often found on standard dynos, ensuring consistent data acquisition.
  • Extreme Power Capability: With a 3000hp capacity, the dyno supports a full spectrum of vehicles, from high-performance 4WD platforms (such as the Nissan GT-R) to heavy-duty commercial vehicles.

With the VIEZU Technical Academy, you will move beyond theory to apply remaps directly on this hardware, analysing live torque and horsepower data in a real-world workshop environment.

The most important prerequisite is genuinely a passion for vehicles and a strong, eager desire to learn the skills. Our tuning courses are designed to guide you from the basics to the advanced techniques required of a professional tuner. We offer introductory overviews, beginner, intermediate and advanced tuning training courses to meet you where your knowledge of tuning is.

What happens after the course finishes?

After you have finished one of our car tuning courses, our relationship doesn’t just suddenly end when you receive your certificate. We offer valuable ongoing support to our graduates and we have recommended learner paths to enable you to continue to build on the knowledge that you have gained. Whether you have a complex question about a specific tuning file or need advice on setting up your own tuning business, then our team is here to help you succeed long after your tuning course finishes.

Do I get a certificate when I complete my tuning course?

Yes, upon successful completion of our in-person courses, you will receive a certificate from the VIEZU Technical Academy, our IMI Approved Training Centre. This qualification is well-recognised within the industry and demonstrates a high, verifiable level of competence and training.

What are the benefits of dyno tuning?

The main benefits of dyno tuning are the precise calibration and safety. Dyno tuning allows a technician to accurately measure and adjust critical parameters like air-fuel ratios, ignition timing and boost pressure under load. This level of control ensures your engine is running at peak, safe performance for a specific set of modifications, rather than just using a generic, one-size-fits-all software map which can be risky.

Is it worth getting a dyno tune?

For high-performance or modified vehicles, a dyno tune is typically essential. If you have installed aftermarket parts that change airflow or fuelling, the factory ECU settings will not be optimal anymore. A custom dyno tune ensures that all new components work together efficiently, maximising power while crucially maintaining reliability. A dyno tune is an investment in the long-term longevity and performance of your engine.

Does a dyno tune increase hp?

Yes, a successful, professionally carried out dyno tune increases both horsepower (hp) and torque. This is achieved by optimising the ECU map to take full advantage of the engine’s mechanical capabilities, often by safely adjusting boost pressure on turbo or supercharged cars or advancing timing on naturally aspirated engines. The dyno verifies the gains in real-time and shows you exactly how much extra power you have achieved in real time.

How long does a dyno tune last?

A professional dyno tune is a permanent software change to your ECU. So essentially it can last for the lifetime of the vehicle, provided that no further mechanical or engine modifications are made to the car. If you decided to add some performance parts to your vehicle such as a new exhaust, intake or a larger turbo, you would need a new dyno tune to properly calibrate the ECU for the new hardware. The tune itself won’t ‘wear out’, but if the specification of your vehicle changes then you would need a new tune to take those new performance parts into consideration.
